The baby name game

ohbaby.jpg  I just had another doctor’s appointment today.  I am 25 weeks along, just shy of getting into the third trimester.  A lot of people are surprised by how far along I am, mainly since most of them didn’t know I was even pregnant until a month ago!  I have to admit, that little ploy has definitely made the whole thing go by a lot faster.  Being pregnant the fourth time around is a completely different experience than the first or even the second time.  Mainly because I just try to ignore the fact that I’m pregnant as much as possible.  The first time or two, you can’t stop thinking about it.  You have to get your weekly updates on baby’s development, you read everything from What to Expect When You’re Expecting to every baby name book out there.  You can’t pass by a Parents magazine without picking it up and perusing carefully the section on the latest trends in diaper bags.  I now find that there’s nothing in the parenting magazines that I haven’t read before several times over (Oh, please give me some new tips on how to get a picky toddler to eat!)  I do need some new baby gear, but I’m putting off shopping for that stuff until the last minute.  Target will have just as many baby car seats and play yards there in two months as they will today.  I’m fairly confident in my ability to handle a newborn child (although I’ve haven’t had to change a diaper with a penis in it for a whilediaper.gif), so I’m not constantly worrying about that.  I’m just sitting back, relaxing, and hoping the weeks just fly by.

So far, that hasn’t been hard, as I am fairly comfortable right now.  Except for the constant need to run to the bathroom ever hour or so, and the feeling from time to time that there’s a package of Jiffy Pop going off inside my abdomen, popcorn.jpg I really haven’t felt that awkward or uncomfortable.  Of course, it’s always the last two months that get really bad, there.  Hopefully the worst of the summer heat will be over before then.

So now, we have to come up with a name.  I have a long list of really cute girl’s names, but I don’t think our second son would appreciate being called Grace or Sophie.  Before, we’ve been kind of dramatic about not revealing our name choice before the baby is born, but I’m kind of over that now.  Both Andrew and I really like the name James, but I don’t think that we want to have it as a first name.  Maybe for a middle.  We’ve actually been considering the name Collin, but I think that’s not quite a right fit either.  We are open to any suggestions right now.  I think I’m kind of looking for something a little old-fashioned sounding, but not ridiculous, like Hezekiah or something.  Let’s try to avoid church history names–I think our family has already used most of the interesting ones!  Maybe something with an Old English, Irish, or Scottish sound to it.  What do you think?  Have you guys heard any interesting names lately? baby_names.jpg

  1. Naming babies is just plain hard. For something old-fashioned, maybe study genealogy? I always find my Norton Anthologies helpful too. If I had a really great name, I wouldn’t tell you, because I might need it!

  2. I come across a lot of different names everyday at work. I’ll have to share some of them with you when we get together. Although, I don’t think any of them really fit into the parameters you’re looking for (but they’re definitely unique!).

  3. I’m with Liz…who knows what gender we might have next…sorry. I like to just put the name out there. Once we know what we are having we name them. Aaron says it makes it more real for him (since he doesn’t have the throwing up to remind him). So…let us know when you decide and hope it isn’t the name Nate and Olya name their kid…when he is born.
