I consider myself to have a fairly good vocabulary. Not to brag, but there are few words in common use out there that I have never heard or don’t at least have some inkling about their meaning. Not that I know every word in the english language, of course; that can be proved just by looking at some of the words on the national spelling bee lists or even just playing a game of Balderdash. But in my general reading, I rarely need to look up anything in the dictionary. Therefore, when I find a new word I’ve never heard before that I find interesting, I kind of dote on it, and try to use it and talk about it as much as possible. So, today’s word of the week is galactagogue. Boy, is that fun to say. Try it. Ga-lac-ta-gogue. Kind of rolls off the tongue, huh? Now, I’m going to challenge you all to figure out what this word means, without looking it up. I’ll give you a hint: it is not an overly formal teacher from outerspace. I’ll post the answer in a couple of days.

Word of the week

What a fun idea! Have you seen the free rice site? http://www.freerice.org for a vocabulary quiz that goes on and on and their advertising dollars buy rice for underdeveloped countries. It’s highly addictive! I don’t know what galactagogue means, but am excited to find out!

Thanks for that link, Liz. I tried it out for a few minutes, and try as I might, I could not get past level 45 (out of 50). It makes you wonder, though: just because a word exists, does that mean that anyone actually ever uses it? Funny link to a pertinent cartoon: http://www.qwantz.com/fanart/bigwords.jpg
